Compliance with this standard is required on virtually all significant industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects \u2014 it ensures that the coating system selected matches the real environmental conditions the structure will face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard defines corrosion categories C1 through CX and immersion categories Im1 through Im4. Choosing the right category is the starting point for selecting the correct paint system, surface preparation and coating thickness. An incorrect category leads either to inadequate protection \u2014 and costly repairs \u2014 or to over-specification and unnecessary cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Atmospheric corrosivity categories C1\u2013CX<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Atmospheric corrosivity is classified according to the aggressiveness of the surrounding environment. EN ISO 12944-2 defines four immersion categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Im1<\/strong> \u2014 immersion in fresh water: river installations, hydropower structures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Im2<\/strong> \u2014 immersion in sea water or brackish water: harbour structures, offshore platforms, ship hulls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Im3<\/strong> \u2014 immersion in soil: buried pipelines, underground structures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Im4<\/strong> \u2014 immersion in sea water or brackish water with cathodic protection (offshore structures)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to determine the correct corrosion category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Selecting the right category requires an assessment of all environmental factors the structure will be exposed to during its service life. Key questions to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> indoors or outdoors? If outdoors \u2014 urban, industrial, rural or coastal?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proximity to water:<\/strong> near a river, sea or body of water? How close?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industrial emissions:<\/strong> are there chemical plants, factories or high-traffic roads nearby?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Humidity and condensation:<\/strong> will there be regular condensation or high humidity inside the building?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design service life:<\/strong> low (2\u20137 years), medium (7\u201315 years), high (15\u201325 years) or very high (25+ years)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Estonia and the Baltic region, the most common categories for industrial and commercial steel structures are <strong>C3<\/strong> (urban and light industrial environments) and <strong>C4<\/strong> (coastal areas, more aggressive industrial environments). Category C5 applies to structures near the sea or in heavily polluted industrial zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paint systems under EN ISO 12944<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the corrosion category and design service life have been established, EN ISO 12944-5 is used to select the paint system. The standard specifies the minimum dry film thickness (DFT) and the number of coats required for each combination of category and durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a structure in category C4 with a high service life (H, 15\u201325 years) typically requires a three-coat system with a total DFT of at least 240 um on blast-cleaned steel (Sa 2.5). For C5 and very high durability (VH, 25+ years), the requirements are considerably more stringent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface preparation plays a critical role: EN ISO 12944-4 requires blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 for categories C4 and above.
