Steel structure design
Structural scheme from scratch or shop drawings from an existing solution. We model in Tekla.
We design load-bearing steel structures in two scopes: developing the structural scheme from scratch and producing shop drawings from an existing structural solution. Work is carried out in Tekla Structures.
What this means in practice
Most steel fabricators wait for finished documentation. We can start earlier: if you have an architectural solution and loads, we develop the structural scheme ourselves.
If the structural part has already been done by another office, we produce the shop drawings — connections, part drawings, specifications and marking plans. The Tekla model exports to IFC, which drops straight into your BIM model.
Scope of design
Structural design
- Development of the structural scheme and comparison of options
- Load collection and strength calculations
- Section selection and optimisation by weight
- Structural design of connections
Shop drawings
- Part drawings for the workshop
- Assembly drawings and marking plans
- Bolt and weld specifications
- Material and weight summary tables
- IFC model for the client BIM environment
Why design with in-house fabrication costs less
When the designer and the fabricator sit in different companies, the drawing is optimised on paper rather than for production. The result is a connection that works on paper but is expensive or awkward to make.
In our case the designer and the plant are one team. A connection is chosen so that it is both strong and quick to fabricate — which directly affects the price and the delivery time. The same logic applies to surface treatment and erection: the model already accounts for how the element fits into the paint chamber and how it will be lifted on site.
The execution class is set during design
Execution class EXC 1–4 is chosen at the design stage in accordance with EN 1090-2 and affects the whole chain: welding quality requirements, extent of inspection and documentation. Our fabrication is certified up to EXC 3 — so there is no situation where the designer specifies a class the fabricator cannot cover.
