An industrial building steel frame is the backbone of modern manufacturing and warehouse construction. A well-designed steel structure ensures long-term reliability, shortens construction time, and enables spatial solutions impossible with concrete or timber. In this article we walk through the key stages of designing an industrial steel frame — from the initial brief to production documentation.

1. Brief and Conceptual Design

Every steel frame project begins with a precise mapping of the client’s needs. At this stage the intended use of the building is established, along with planned loads (overhead cranes, storage areas, equipment), overall dimensions, and required clearances. Conceptual design covers the choice of the structural system: portal frames, moment frames, cross-beams, or hybrid systems.

It is advisable to involve a structural engineer as early as the briefing stage, since an incorrect starting point leads to costly changes later. Steel Element OÜ offers consultation services from the very beginning of the project.

2. Load Analysis and Structural System Selection

In accordance with Eurocode standards, the following load types must be considered when designing a steel frame:

  • Permanent loads — self-weight of structure and roof covering
  • Variable loads — snow, wind, overhead cranes, floor loads
  • Accidental loads — seismic action (low but considered in Estonia)

Based on load calculations, cross-sections for frames and beams are selected. Typical industrial buildings use I-section beams, HEA/HEB columns, and cold-formed thin-walled elements for roof and wall panels.

3. 3D Modelling and Structural Design

Modern steel structure design is carried out in three-dimensional software environments (Tekla Structures, Advance Steel, SDS/2). A 3D model allows clash detection between structural members at the design stage and automatically generates precise fabrication drawings.

The structural design package includes detailed drawings of frame and beam connections, anchor bolt and foundation interfaces, material and weight data for every element, and erection sequence instructions.

4. Corrosion Protection Strategy

The service life of an industrial building steel frame depends critically on its surface protection. According to the EN ISO 12944 standard, the environmental class (C1–C5) is determined and an appropriate coating system is selected. A typical manufacturing building falls into corrosion class C3, requiring a minimum dry film thickness of 80–120 μm.

Steel Element OÜ carries out surface preparation and painting of steel structures in certified conditions in full compliance with EN ISO 12944 requirements.

5. Production Documentation and EN 1090 Compliance

Before production begins, complete fabrication documentation is prepared: bill of materials (BOM), welding procedure specifications (WPS), material certificates (EN 10204), and inspection and test plans. All Steel Element OÜ steel structures comply with EN 1090-2 at execution class EXC2 or EXC3.

CE marking confirms that the structure has been designed and manufactured in accordance with the European Construction Products Regulation — mandatory since 2014 for all load-bearing steel structures.

6. Erection and Quality Control

Steel frame erection follows an agreed erection method statement. Critical connections are subject to non-destructive testing (NDT): ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, or visual examination, depending on the execution class requirements.

Steel Element OÜ manages the entire process from handover of design documentation to the final erection acceptance certificate. Our Tallinn production facility has a capacity of up to 300 tonnes of steel structures per month.

Summary

Designing an industrial building steel frame is a multi-stage process demanding experience, precision, and in-depth knowledge of standards. A well thought-out project means a shorter construction programme, lower lifecycle costs, and a more reliable result.
